How do I find the details to order a will copy?
« on: Sunday 19 November 23 13:11 GMT (UK) »
I have a will abstract from the Country Court Death Duty Register (National Archives) for a will proved in the Peculiar Court of Long Stow in the Diocese of Lincoln, in 1806.

I know the testator, date and place of residence from the abstract, but to order a copy of the will from Lincolnshire Archives, I think I need some kind of reference. Does anyone know how I go about finding that?  Searching for Lincolnshire probate indexes seems to send me down all kinds of rabbit holes without any result.

Many thanks in advance if you can help.

Thank you for that, KGarrad.

Looks as if the answer is a no, if I want something online about a will in 1806.

It does seem as though they should be at Lincoln.
I can’t get the page to load though

Thank you, yes I can see that if the will exists at all, it should be at Lincoln.  Only it doesn't look as though it is possible to order a copy without a reference number from the wills index, which I was hoping might be online somewhere.

There seems to be  a huge difference between county archives in how easy it is to find and order will copies.

The documents of the Peculiar Prebendary of Stow Longa, including wills, appear to be in the Huntingdonshire Archives, which are indexed within the Cambridgeshire Archives.

There’s an email address for the Huntingdonshire Archives on Discovery.

It’s worth a try.

Thanks Ili1133
It's on their list, at least.   Now off to find out if they actually have it  :)
