Go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, invest in a few credits and use some of them to find his birth certificate. It will tell you the names of his parents, including his mother's maiden surname, and when and where his parents were married.

Search using his mother's maiden surname to see if he had any siblings.

Use this information to find him with his parents in the 1921 census.

There is a death of John Anderson, mother's maiden surname Scott, in Glasgow in 2009, aged 89. This may be him but both Mackay and Scott are very common names, so you'd be safer to start with the birth and work from there.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Welcome to Rootschat

How do you know he was born in Renfrewshire?  Where did you get his birthdate from?  Are you descended from one of his children?

If so - his marriage cert will give you the names of his parents & his mothers maiden name

If you are looking for info re his WW2 service - read this thread

William McKay B 1839 + Catherine Jackson Anderson 1841 are on my aunt's tree
I thought they were too old to be John Jackson McKay's grandparents but I see their son William was b 1879

We have DNA links thru 2 of William McKay
seniors siblings Helen Davies McKay  b1830
+ My direct ancestor Donald McKay 1823

If John Anderson McKay s relatives take ancesty
DNA test they will show as a match
