If Mary was 40ish when she married have you considered she might have been a widow and Charles would be her first husband's surname? Have you found her in 1841 before she married William Neat?
Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)

There's a Mary Nurse bapt Llangarren 31 July 1808 d/o William and Sarah. Looks as though she possibly married a James Charles at Welsh Newton on 24 Aug 1834. They are together in 1841. Can't find him later and several possible deaths for a James Charles in the right sort of area, but would need to check age at death.
Not certain it's your Mary but a possibility

Lizziel, I was going down exactly the same route as you and agree with your findings. I know it’s only a twig on OP’s tree but marriage cert will answer doubts

I think the most likely death (assuming he died within the area of Monmouth RD, which is where they were in 1841) is James Charles Q3 1847 age 34. There is a brief mention of a death of a James Charles on 3 July 1847 "of paralysis while at work on the Skenehill, clerk to the Rev Thomas Price" in Monmouthshire Beacon  10 July 1847. Could be the same one.

Huge tks to LizzieL, softly softly and garstonite for joining the conversation and making such a valuable contribution to the William & Mary story.  It all makes sense and is validated to some degree as in the 1841 census, Mary and James Charles were living  really close to the Neat household.  The men probably worked together as well.

An amazing piece of detective work by all respondents and a useful lesson for yours truly on alternative research methods.
