Thomas Ferris
« on: Tuesday 21 November 23 11:47 GMT (UK) »
I am wondering if anyone could suggest the next steps for researching my 2nd great-grandfather, Thomas Ferris.

My great-grandmother was born illegitimate in St Rollox on 1st January 1920 to Mary Goldie. There was no father listed on her birth certificate. She was adopted alongside her sister after her sister was born on 18th September 1921.

From a poor law record, I found her father's name was Thomas Ferris who worked as a Carter in the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company.

I also found a union record. He joined the union on 29th September 1918 at the age of 32, meaning he was born around 1886, and left in February 1920.

I have not found a 1921 census that matches his descriptions. I have also not found a 1921 census record for Mary Goldie although she lived in Parson Street in September 1921.

Is there anything more I could do to find out more about Thomas Ferris?

Given his date of birth, he probably served in WW1, so you could look for army records.

I have also not found a 1921 census record for Mary Goldie although she lived in Parson Street in September 1921.

When and where was Mary born?
What was the name of her child born in 1920.?

Thanks for the suggestions.

Mary Goldie was born 17th February 1891 at 8 Queens Place, Greenside, Edinburgh

Her daughter, Janet Baird Morrison Goldie, was born on the 18th September 1921, registered in St Rollox. Her mother was a Restaurant Kitchenmaid living at 17 Parson Street.

Her first daughter, Margaret Baird Goldie, was on the 1921 census called Margaret Baird living in a foster home with Henry and Margaret Burns

From your suggestion from census records.

The Thomas Ferriss in Gorbals was a lorryman for the Glasgow and South Western Railway Company. It says he was born in Newton Stewart, Wigtown but I can't find a birth record. Also, would lorryman be the same job as a carter?

Yes, i would say that a lorryman for the railway is much the same as a carter for the railway.

There is a Thomas Scott Ferries birth registration Aug 1881 Penninghame
His father David born abt 1850 Newton Stewart, is a railway porter on the 1891 and 1901 census.
His mother was Elizabeth Nelson.

Very Good spot!
There is a Thomas Scott Ferries born Aug 1881 at Penninghame Wigtownshire
Bapt  7 Aug 1881 s of David and Elizabeth nee Nelson

1901 census Penninghame 24 Queen st
David 50 railway porter born Newtown Stewart
Elizabeth 52 Penninghame
Thomas Scott 19 gnorn domestic I' m assuming a groom
Robert 17 apprentice saddler
Jessie 14
Emma 10

I haven't got 1911 but it sort of fits with the 1921 census, except of course he's 10 years older.
He marries Annie Cosh in 1922.On his death cert 1st April 1958 he is a Carter.
His age is given as 76 years so 1882

Thank you for all the help and suggestions.

I do believe that Thomas Scott Ferries is the guy I have been looking for. I had looked in NRH at the 1921 census and checked every single record for Thomas Ferris, and the lorryman in Gorbals is the only one who even gets close to matching.

I have e-mailed a relative who also does genealogy to get her thoughts. I am going to build this tree on ancestry and see if anyone of my DNA matches suddenly links through this tree.
