Did William Morgan divorce and remarry?
« on: Wednesday 22 November 23 23:31 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for the divorce and/or marriage of William Henry Morgan in Washington between 1930 and 1933.

William was born in Marquette County, Wisconsin on 9 April 1852.  He married Caroline Ann (Carrie) Chapman on 2 July 1876 in Marquette County.  They had five children.  The family moved west from place to place and eventually emigrated to Saskatchewan in 1905/6.  However, all but one of them ultimately returned to the US.  Carrie came back in 1927 followed by William in 1929.  They settled in Spokane, Washington and can be found there on the 1930 census.

William died on 14 November 1933 in Seattle at his residence, 10337 Stone Ave.  He was 81 years old (his age is correct on the death certificate, but the birth year is wrong).  Oddly, the certificate named his wife as "Amelia J." and the informant was someone named Amelia Johnson who resided next door at 10335 Stone Ave.  I have been unable to identify a plausible Amelia Johnson or find any record of William's divorce from Carrie or a second marriage to Amelia.  Carrie died about six years later in Spokane; she was recorded as a widow on her certificate.

It appears to be an error by the clerk.

Johnson and Sons are the Funeral Directors/Undertakers. Amelia Johnson could be part of the firm.

Yes, my first thought was an error by the clerk.  But, yikes, it would have been two gross errors, maybe three.   The birth year was off by a decade, the wife's name was wrong, and the name of the informant might also be wrong.  I have no idea who Amelia Johnson was, but if she was the informant, she was well informed.  She got William's birthday right and also gave the correct names and birthplaces of his mother and father.

Thanks, OOH.  I guess it just boils down to sloppy work in the clerk's office.
