Looking at Mr Dyer’s war record, he might not have been the father of either Edna or Evelyn?

Yes both Edna and Evelyn born whilst Ernest Dyer overseas. Lena kept both secret to her grave until I checked my mothers birth certificate where both were listed as previous issue. I got copy Evelyn's birth Cert. after 100 years rule in WA. Shows Ernest as father but not the case. Edna was adopted out in WA. have all her family history. no adoption records in WA for Evelyn.
as Lena returned to NSW in 1919 presume she adopted out Evelyn prior to Ernest return.
Lena returned to NSW and reunited with Ernest in 1919 and had two more daughers , Elsie 1921 and Elva 1923, my mother, Ernest died in 1925.
Lena brought up Ethel, Stan, Elsie and Elva on her own.

He apparently settled in England after the war, and died there in 1922. Various articles on trove including:

More detail of his life:

Modified to add:
Actually, maybe this is the wrong Ernest DYER, says his wife was Annie WATSON.

If they were conceived when husband was at war it could explain her ( + sister ) being adopted out .

I helped a WW2 adoptee whose mothers husband was named on her birth certificate.
But was a prisoner of war

On maternal side She had older half sisters who remembered her as she'd lived them til she was 4 + younger siblings who didn't know of her

I suppose it was pot luck whether returning soldiers chose to accept children who were not theirs .

A rumour about. " adoption " can be perpetuated if a sibling is judged as looking different to their siblings

Without meaning to be too critical, it is always more useful to Rootschatters if requests carry the full details of what you already know, as replied by CaroleW, rather than a oneliner.

Agree, it is helpful to have information.
Did Edna May retain her name? Was Evelyn mentioned in Edna's records/death notice/did research unearth Edna's father?
Did Evelyn Mavis retain her name? Any clues/hearsay as to where/who Evelyn Mavis ended up with? Which state/married/death/children etc.
