The British War Medal was instituted by the UK Parliament in July 1919 with the Victory Medal being instituted in September 1919. The actual medals were not available until a year or more later depending upon supply schedules. However, the ribbons for both medals were available soon after the medal was officially instituted.

If the Photo of the Horses was 1 June 1916 is it possible it is a Photo of Fred on Horses with the King's Own Royal Lancaster Regt ?

Or it possible the Horses Photo is of his Brother who was in the Royal Horse Artillery  ?

Have just been told the Photo of the Horses does not have 1 June 1916 on its  Rear that date was on a Letter Home
The Photo of the Horses just says Hunts  - so No date
So could be Fred in the Essex after joining in 1919

If the photo was 1919 or later then he would have medal ribbons so have you considered that he joined the EY first and then transferred to the Infantry and then went to France.

Where did he live pre-war?

1911 Census shows him One of Nine Children living at Parents Home in Bishops Stortford Hertfordshire he was Aged 17 and a Carter
His Marriage Certificate in April 1916 he is shown just a Soldier and the address for Him and his Bride is in Brighton Sussex
I think he was Conscripted 1916 and appears to have been posted straight to the King's Own Royal Lancaster but it is possible with the theory suggested.
His Brother William Arthur joined the Royal Horse Artillery
Fred was awarded a Long Service Medal in 1936 as Sgt 5879647 from the Northamptonshire Regt

Can you show the full picture of the first post as his shoulder titles may date it.

The title looks like the short EY one so post WW1 and judging by the ladies outfit early 1920s.

Good evening,

Just as a matter of interest what is the white rope thing like a lanyard around the  necks of the horses please?

It is a lead rope, one end attached to the bridle usually on the left. Then thrown over the neck from the left side and tied with a cavalry knot under the neck. Used to lead the horse when dismounted rather than the reins. Also for tying the horse to a ring.
