If Martha was not in a "spousal" relationship with William, would she not have been quartered with the single women as were Elizabeth and Margaret.
It makes the cousin/sister theory a little odd ::)

Perhaps she was originally on the list as Elizabeth Marshall Renton, and the Marshall became Martha?

Although how does the age work compared with the 1841 & 1851?

added - Badly!

Thanks Sue, I can’t answer why they were quartered together unless because of the same surname they were accepted as a couple, but you are right that it doesn’t make sense, which is why I have posed the question on here, has me questioning the 1851 census as well. The death of Eliza seems legitimate

I have not been able to find any suitable Martha in Scotland - BMD or census.

Perhaps she was originally on the list as Elizabeth Marshall Renton, and the Marshall became Martha?

I tend to agree that mckha489's suggestion has some weight, since she is recorded along side William, and no Eliza of the right age is there. Perhaps the age is also some kind of error.

As has been mentioned, at least 20 years had passed from the supposed 1854 death of Eliza and the erection of the headstone which memorialises   both William and Eliza RENTON and ignores Hannah who died in 1890.
It seems unlikely erected by Hannah and more likely by one of the children who would get their mother’s death year correct surely.

Your William Renton would have only been about 10yo in 1819  ???

I meantime to add that, only that the name seems to exist in the family line.
I did find an Ancestry tree that lists an older sister , Martha but no confirmed documentation
