The 1901 Census (snippet image courtesy of Ancestry) shows that he was born in Botriphnie, Banffshire (village now known as Drummuir) but I am struggling to find a birth / baptism for him.

Familysearch throws up the following James Grant with father Alexander:

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYYH-562

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYB3-HWL

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYYC-KPJ

As he indicated in the 1901 Census that he was 39 years of age, he could be one of the three in the links, born 1861 or 1862

As suggested above - downloading the marriage cert will confirm his parents

Opening post says "I believe his father was called Alexander" so suggests this has not been proved

I have the marriage certificate and it say Reputed father Alexander, my next quest is to find his mother, this has me going in circles as she is down as Jessie/Janet Duff grant nee Milne, there is an awful lot of confusion here I have her marrying David Duff in 1871 but nothing about her marrying Alexander Grant. I very much appreciate any help.
