however I am still tring to find details of his mother Janet/Jessie Milne born 1842.
All help would be appreciated

Transcription from a family bible attached to a public family tree on Ancestry.

Peter Milne who was born in the year 1818 May 26 in Glen of Bodenfinnach - Botriphnie
His son James who was born in January the 22 1838.  Another son Peter Milne who was born in March the 1 1840.
Jannet Milne who was Born the 27 April 1842 Anno Domini the year of God.
They were all lawful born to me by Elisabeth Bremner who was espoused to me Peter Milne in 1837 Feb 10. Who died the third of April 1847 aged 46 after a long illness.

This shows that Janet / Jessie Milne's father was Peter -- confirms my earlier post that shows James Grant, described as being a grandson, living in the household of Peter Milne in the 1871 Census.

Jessie Milne married David Duff in 1871
In the 1871, 1881 and 1891 census they are living in Gamrie.
Looking at the census, no children show up. No birth records for children on  Scotlands People

David Duff died in Gamrie in 1884
Jessie did not divorce or re-marry. I don’t understand why you think she did?

Jessie died age 89 on 27 Oct 1932 – burial in Ardler Churchyard
Her death registration shows both her maiden name (MILNE) and her married name (DUFF)

I am thinking Jessie Duff who married David Duff is not the Jane/Jessie Milne who is James Grants mother. However "Duff" does appear in several of the Grants names eg David Duff Grant  born 1907 Knockworth Bannifshire, his grand daughter who I am doing the tree for has always been baffled by this.
I am trying now to find the marriage cert of Janet/Jessie Milne to a Grant.

I am thinking Jessie Duff who married David Duff is not the Jane/Jessie Milne who is James Grants mother.
Jessie Duff and James Grant are living in the same house in the census.
I would recommend you have a much better look at the records.

There was never any marriage. James Grant was illegitimate. I have already given you the marriage details of his father Alexander Grant.
Once again, please have a look at previous post and all the records.

I am trying now to find the marriage cert of Janet/Jessie Milne to a Grant.

As Neale1961 has stated and what I stated in one of my earlier posts -- James Grant was the illegitimate son of Janet / Jessie Milne (daughter of Peter Milne). James changed his birth name from Milne to Grant and is living with his grandfather Peter Milne in the 1871 Census (again, this is in one of my earlier posts). Please read the information in all of the posts, at the end of the day, forum members are trying to assist you.

Being a novice to all this I do make mistakes and get rather confused, I am re-reading everything and do appreciate all help.

So Janet/Jessie Milne gave birth to James, Alexanders son, she went on to marry David Duff and then went back to Alexander Grant?

James married Barbara Christina Porter and went on to have children one of which was david Duff Grant, incorperating his mothers  married name Duff seems strange.
