Tracing Roots of great grandfather Charles Schwartz
« on: Tuesday 28 November 23 11:05 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm trying to trace the European roots of my great great grandfather as it is a dead end for me.

Charles (Carl) Ludwig Schwartz
Born 7 Apr 1852 • Prague(supposed), Austria (as listed on emigration doc) Died 18 FEB 1917 , NSW Australia
Emigrated to Fremantle , Australia via London 07th March 1883 Fremantle London Age 32
Married Jane Hurlstone in Australia in 1885 if that would help looking up notices in Austria
Possibly his parents firstnames Adolphe and Theresa
He spoke german.

I have his history in Australia
thanks for any assistance in advance

At the time of his birth, Prague would have been part of the Austrian Empire, so very standard for him to list himself as Austrian on documents.

You should also look for spelling Schwarz and he may be found as Karl or Karel

Unfortunately I can't see him in these records. It is possible he came from a smaller place in the Prague area perhaps?

thanks for the info. We have no idea where he came from. I ran through all the variations of his name and couldnt find anything for that birthdate. We know his birthdate is accurate.
Also I can't find anything about him landing in the UK (before departing for Australia)

Not found a birth in Prague Evangelical registers or Catholic but have only looked at 1852.How sure are you of the information you currently have. Do you have any occupation listed for him or his father?

his occupation listed on his UK departure record is cabinetmaker. Everything I have points to the DOB being accurate.
Another rootschat member msged me with the following info
His Father as Adolphe Schwartz
born 1824 Sandweg West Prussia
I'm not sure of the accuracy of this info but the firstname of his father was supposedly Adolphe

Sometimes a story is a bit clearer with original sources:

1883-1888 Western Australian Bio from the  Austalian Rica Erickson collection: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CSN3-ZZ9D?i=4357
Father’s name = Ludwig

1904 Naturalization papers: https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/ViewImage.aspx?B=1628

NSW death index
Year: 1917
Regn: 711/1917
Family Name: Schwartz
Given Names: Charles L
Father Given Names: Adolphe
Mother Given Names: Theresa

District: Newtown
NOTE: I assume his fathers name might have been something like Ludvig Adolphe or Adolphe Ludvig ...
-
Death/burial notices 19 Feb 1917: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/239225818?searchTerm=schwartz
NOTE: It is mentioned that his age was 58, so now born in 1858 (if he was indeed born in April …)

Can the OP list the contents of death certificate?

thanks for finding the error with his DOB. It was incorrectly based on his  immigration document.
I get a hit on
Schwartz    Karl    1857 on previous noted website
https://digi.nacr.cz/prihlasky2/

With the following
Schwartz Josef (1820)
Schwartz (Lintner) Franziska (1828)
Schwartz Josef (1853)
Schwartz Karl (1857)
Schwartz Franziska (1859)

Something to follow up on but may not be our Charles
