Henry Messenger marriage in 1909 - wife background
« on: Tuesday 28 November 23 16:22 GMT (UK) »
In 1909 in York, Ontario, Henry Messenger married Eva May Robinson.  Both claim they were widowed, Henry definitely was not.
Eva was a cook, 24, usual residence Woodbridge, with parents William Robinson, a stone cutter, and Caroline Portman.
What I wanted to know was
1) Who did she first marry?
2) Did he die before she married again?
3) As she had been married before was it normal for her to revert to her maiden name, or could she possibly have married a Robinson? Or was her father's surname as Robinson a mistake?
I have been side-tracked by claims that she was surname Bird in some trees.

I have records after their marriage, but for my research I just want to know if she was also a bigamist or her first husband had really died.

Thank-you

Added: She also appears as Edith, as did Henry's first wife.

Just found the marriage in 1908 of James Robinson age 33 to Edith May Bird age 23.  Of relevance is her Mother's name as Caroline Portman, with father William Bird, born Malvern, England.  Marriage at Halton Oakville.
James was born at Niagara Falls with parents Alexander Robinson and Annie Wentin (?).

In 1909 there is a daughter born to Henry William Messenger and Eva May Bird (full maiden name).  She gives Jeffery Robson as the name of her former husband.
Gives a marriage date of 2nd Feb 1908, not 2nd February 1909.

The marriage registrations are copied into the county books from returns submitted by the clergyman so a mistake is not unheard of.

Henry died 8 August 1939 in Toronto. His wife, Edith, of 53 Devon Road, is the informant.

Found the death of a James Robinson, aged 31, born England, Anglican, married, a labourer, in Toronto General Hospital of myocarditis and bronchopneumonia. These death records did not name parents or names of spouses.

Hi, eileenwilson,

Thanks for the information on the copying of records.
What year was that death of a James - he claimed he was 33 at marriage, but age could be another mistake.

Sorry, just checked - the Robinson Bird marriage was May 20th 1908.  He cannot marry after he has died....
