John Hunt born about 1791 possibly Ashreigney, Devon, England
« on: Tuesday 28 November 23 22:01 GMT (UK) »
This is related to another thread regarding his wife Mary Pope.

https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=766090.0

He was listed as from Ashreigney, Devon on the marriage document to Mary Pope.  He signed that document. He married  Elizabeth in Chittlehampton so possibly from there.

The previous thread mentioned above  found many useful connections but unable to find anything about John Hunt before his marriage to Elizabeth Jarman (Jerman, German, Jirman) in Chittlehampton, Devon, England 26 April 1820.

From Canada records, it seems there were at least two Hunt families that came to Canada  but can't connect them to John Hunt as we have found nothing on his parents or siblings.

John Hunt was a blacksmith and farmer.  He passed 12 JUL 1879 in North Dorchester, Middlesex, Ontario, Canada and informant was his son George Hunt 1827-1899.

Hi
Have you noticed a Richard and Sarah Hunt blacksmith at Chittlehampton?
He is born 1788 at Chumleigh according to the 1851 census.
They married 9.12.1813 Richard Hunt and Sarah Tinson.
His gravestone gives a slightly earlier birth of 1785.

Unfortunately several Richard Hunts born at Chumleigh.
But if you assume they are brothers  then only two.
John and Grace Down married 6.12.1780 Barnstaple - John 17.9.1786 and Richard 20.11.1791
other children Grace 1781 Mary 1784 and  Elizabeth 1789  or
Richard and Elizabeth Row married 7.5.1777 (made mark )- Richard 28.11.1784 and John 23.5.1795
other children Elizabeth 1780 ,Ann 1782 ,George 1787 (wheelwright),and Sarah 1790.

I'd tend to go for Richard and Elizabeth but the age for John is slightly out and they signed with a cross.

Best I can  come up with

Further research found William's obituary giving birth as "Ring Ash" in 1838 but the obit did fill in some other blanks

I would try the Devon Records Office. They also have a contact us feature for questions
I took a quick look at the catalogue and found the following:-

John Hunt and Elizabeth his wife 1812 removal order to Ashreigney
Ref: 4678A/PO/3/53

These are one set of possible parents for John Hunt, the full removal order could list the children and will definitely where they were living at the time tell you why they were sent to Ashreigney.
----------------------
Richard Hunt of Chumleigh 1837 Will
-------------------
Lease of property for lives by Richard Hunt his wife Sarah and daughter Mary dated 1822.
-----------------
Mary Hunt 1835 of Chittlehampton removal order (not sure who she is connected to but removal orders are full of information)
Ref: 3004/A/PO/189/2/52
---------------
There are 192 items for the name Jarman, 146 for Jerman.7 for Jermain
192 for the name Hunt between 1790 and 1850
1451 items in total for the name Hunt so if you get back further plenty to search through.
2692 for the name Pope
------------
Elizabeth Hunt single woman removal order to Ashreigney 1787.
-------------------
889 items for the village of Ashreigney
