I am currently tracing my wife’s family history and trying to find the birth records for the children of a marriage between Archibald Evans 1817, Rothsay - 1889 , Port Glasgow and Jane/JeanNimmo c1819 - 1889, Port Glasgow. They were married in Duntocher, Old or West Kilpatrick in 1842.

Jane Evans born c. 1852 Dumbarton
Archibald Evans born c. 1855 Dumbarton
Marion Evans born 1857 Port Glasgow
John Evans born 1860 Port Glasgow
Annie Evans born c. 1864 Port Glasgow
Mary Evans born c.1866 Port Glasgow
There seems to birth registration post 1857 in Port Glasgow but cannot find birth entries pre 1857 in Old Kilpatrick. Is this because records for this area and period have been lost, or just because the births have not been properly registered?

Birth registration in Scotland started in 1855, before that you are looking for parish baptisms.

You’ll find it on Scotlands People under “other churches”.

Marion - 16 Feb 1857 Port Glasgow (death 1860 on SP, ref 574 / 30)

James -  2 Apr 1859  Port Glasgow (death 1860 on SP, 574 / 33)

Ann - 1 Aug 1863 Port Glasgow

I think Archibald must have been born in 1854 and just missed the start of official registration.

The daughter Mary born c. 1866. Mother's maiden name of MCLUSKY showing on the birth index on SP. Maybe there is an error on the index. You would need to view the original.

Can't see anything for a John born c. 1860...but there is a possible entry on SP in 1861.
