Finding whereabouts of Great Uncle Albert Leonard New
« on: Wednesday 29 November 23 23:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I am trying to find what happened to my relation Albert Leonard New b. 1883 Newbury Berkshire England, he was son of Ellen New.   He was raised by his Grandparents John & Ellen New, married around 1904 to Fanny Elizabeth Townsend Wheeler.  She died in 1914 at Wallingford, Berkshire, they previously had one child Roy Leslie Townsend New.

1911 Census Albert Leonard New was shown as living with his Aunt & Uncle John & Fanny New and family, they then migrated to Australia later in 1911.   No further information can be found on Albert Leonard New.   His wife died in 1914, but she had been in this Mental facility for a couple of years prior to her death.

Have just found a hint on Ancestry suggesting that A.L. New b. about 1882 arrived Cape Town South Africa on board the "Llanstephan Castle".  He departed from Southampton on the 30th September, 1919.   However looking at the shipping records attached, I just cannot find his name thereon.

Wonder if there is anyone who could assist me to ascertain the correct information, to enable me to find out what happened to our Great Uncle.

Thanking you.   Jan

Carole W, yes I meant to add the other child, but he died very young.   Only mentioned the son Roy Leslie Townsend New, as this poor child was not with his Father, and from later research have discovered that Roy became a Home Child in Canada.

Have never found Albert Leonard New, unless he maybe married Maud Louise Smee in 1914 at Reading.

This latest hint on Ancestry has made me think, maybe he went to South Africa, his other New family members all migrated to Australia.

His surviving son can be found on the 1939 register so doubt he became a Home Child

Fanny only died Dec qtr 1914 can't be the Smee marriage which was in the March qtr - unless there was a divorce?

Have you already discounted the 1969 death for Albert New in London?

A tree on Ancestry says Albert was in Berkshire in 1948??

Hi again,
Yes, I notice that this marriage to Smee was in the earlier quarter of 1914, but thought maybe as Fanny had been in the mental facility, maybe a divorce occurred, or married illegally.
There is one tree on Ancestry, has some notations, the direct descendant of Roy New also has been searching for years, would have believed that she would have contacted me if she found his death.

I wonder have you seen those shipping records I have referred to.

None of the outgoing lists on Ancestry match his birthdate.  One entry has no birthdate but was travelling with wife Florence K & 1yr old son - to Sydney in 1901.  The marriage of that couple was 1898 in Reading.

I don’t have a WW Ancestry sub so can’t check the others but Ancestry is showing an obit notice for an Albert Leonard New - US Newspapers.com

Thanks Carole, we definitely know that Albert New was in Newbury in 1911 census with his relations, so that counts out the Sydney trip 1901.

Did you happen to notice what date the death was for him in the United States.  Nor do I have a subscription to World Wide Ancestry.

It just shows the name & the newspaper reference.  He's not showing on the US censuses 1920-1950
