Thanks Carole, well looks like no response from South Africa notation, so maybe I've got this posting on the wrong country.

Thank  you for your assistance anyway.

Roy Townsend New does appear in Canadian archive as a home child, sent in 1920 by National Children’s Home.

The records might be held in local archives but there should be some info available about Roy, and possibly about Fanny, that mention Albert, as the location of the father/husband was often of interest to authorities (from the point of view that he should be paying for them if he was around).  If you're lucky they'll say something about where he was, or at least give you a better idea of when he left the area (if he did).

As to the Smee marriage - Albert James New and Maude Louise New are on the census togther in 1921 in Reading, so unless your man added 10 years to his age and a new middle name, not him.

Thank you once again for this information.
Seems this New family liked to change their names for various reasons, Albert Leonard New's cousin in Australia also changed his surname, after his marriage disintegrated!!!
It could be that he migrated somewhere else, South Africa maybe, but I cannot find any information so far, unless there is someone who can assist who lives in this country.

Have just found a hint on Ancestry suggesting that A.L. New b. about 1882 arrived Cape Town South Africa on board the "Llanstephan Castle".  He departed from Southampton on the 30th September, 1919.   However looking at the shipping records attached, I just cannot find his name thereon.

He's not on there.  It is a transcription error.  The image entry is clearly for surname KERR.

If you go back to the image, and bring up the index under the image, you will see they are saying A. L. News is listed immediately before Mr C. H. Kelly. Attached is a clip to show you what I mean.
