Help with 1841 Census writing please

I am research my family William Boughton Backshell and finally found him on the 1851 census but unfortunately I cannot decipher his profession/occupation from the handwriting. He is on the top line of the page attached and  I think it says Assistant Surveyor but I can read the rest.

Would really appreciate help with this one.
