Familysearch Location for Civil Registration District Was Abolished in 1637!
« on: Saturday 02 December 23 02:54 GMT (UK) »
I was just looking at a result on Familysearch from the Civil registration Indices. Namely:

Patrick G Ryan
Ireland Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958
Birth Registration from April 1948 to June 1948
County of the Cross of Tipperary, Ireland

Notice anything odd about this result? Very odd?
Yes, it's the location, the "County of the Cross of Tipperary". Said county was abolished in 1637, over 300 years before the 1948 birth!

And just to be sure, to be sure, it was abolished again in 1715!

So, where is the actual location? Tipperary? Clonmel? Who knows.... these guys are so crazy I don't know what to say.

What do these folks in Familysearch have against Tipperary?

The very next result for the search I performed says:
Birth Registration from October 1951 to December 1951
Clonmel, County Cork, Ireland

Duh!

Have these folks never heard of a gazetteer? A map?

Was done in a www project by people picking locations from drop down lists, attempting to be helpful but some obviously had no Irish geographical knowledge and no understanding of the civil registration system & districts.

Really FamilySearch were at fault as they should only have provided options for the Civil Reg / PLU Districts, nothing else.
So which one does an Irish diaspora pick given they are transcribing a quarterly alphabetical surname page with Districts scattered across the 32 counties and there is one for a birth or death in Lurgan - the top one that presents itself, a townland in Westmeath, or do they select Donegal, Cavan or scroll on trying to find one actually in Co. Armagh?

One could also ask why is it offering Townlands / Lurgan places of Worship / Lurgan R.C. Parish / populated place / Lurgan, CANADA as a search INPUT when is "Ireland Civil Registration Indexes, 1845-1958" & only the Registration District appeared in the Index. Perhaps they want people to be able to search for gt gt grandad from Rosslare without knowing anyting about Parishes, District or Counties... but Canada?

How about actual oddities -  Index Entries for Births Abroad?
Kamptee, Ireland https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FBP8-2TL
Ancestry then re-use the dataset and have as
Alexander Dudley Mcn Collins. Birth Quarter Oct-Nov-Dec 1908. Birth Place: Kamptee, India, Ireland
or his sister Ellen E M Collins 1904, Birth place Secunderabad, Ireland.

But why is the drop down list populated with options such as counties abolished in 1637 in the first place? For a database starting in 1864 for births, deaths and most marriages?
Where the most granular location specified is the SRDs (PLUs)?

I am not so inclined to excuse Familysearch and their role in this. They go to a lot of effort and generate a rubbish output. Yet they actually knew what is correct, and applied no quality controls whatsoever.  They are affiliated with the LDS church, and their Family History Centers. They generated guides to the Irish Civil Registration system, how it worked, maps of the different SRDs/PLUs, everything  - all many decades ago. So they are perfectly cognisant of the Irish setup and areas.

Precisely. The index only refers to SRDs!
But what gets me is the consistency.
You gave examples of Lurgan.
My example would be Gorey; just about every - maybe every! - registration I have seen for Gorey is listed as Co. Donegal.

I very, very rarely use Familysearch, and this is why. You can't even remotely trust the locations.

unfortunately they also made their way into https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/2573/ so all those Gorey and Lurgan Co Donegal are hinted to and selected, unamended, by many.
The Select / Ireland Births and Baptisms, 1620-1881 are as bad geographically.

Others have vented too.

It's Tipperary Town.
