Polish/Czech help please :)
« on: Saturday 02 December 23 09:47 GMT (UK) »
My grandfather Otto Stadler was born 1925 in Szczakowa, Kattowice, Poland. His mother was Anna Reichel, I believe from
Bilin, Bohemia and his father was wladyslaus Stadler, a polish glass worker. It has taken me ages to
Work that much out as my grandfather was also very quiet about his past. It seems a minefield trying to research this area of the world as the borders changed so much. Do you research Poland? Upper Austria? Bohemia? Sudetenland? Checkoslovakia? Any tips for searching would be so appreciated 😊 Clare :)

For Guide to Czech archives and some for Poland see link below. You will need to know what religion they followed as records are held in different locations.

https://www.myczechroots.com/search-tools/digital-archives

If it is Bílina near Teplice you will find  records at the Litomerice archives. See the E study room for digitised records. Search using the Czech placename spelling without diacritics.

If the family were Jewish, Czech records are  held centrally at National archives Prague.

Litomerice archives seem to be having technical problems so I had a look on family Search and have found Anna Reichel's baptism, spelt Reichl here, but it tells you her marriage date to Vladislav Stadler ( 21 Feb 1923 in Piotrkow) so it's definitely the right person. You will need to log in to family search to view but it is a free site.

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:2:77TL-7D3Z?i=99&wc=3NCK-827%3A979674501%2C979702601%2C982385303%2C982386801&cc=1804263

Anna Reichl born 11 March 1900 bapt on the 17th March. Address 177 Bahnhofstrasse, Bilin.

Parents marriage date 30 June 1896

 Father
Franz Reichl , Catholic, glassmaker?  born 27 Nov 1871 Auerbach house 22,  district of Braunau, Upper Austria son of Karoline Reichl who was the daughter of Joseph Reichl a shoemaker of Auerbach and his wife Magdalena nee Maislinger
Mother
Barbara, catholic, born 14 Jan 1870 Vsenic 25,  Pilsen district
Legitimate daughter of Wenzel Lhoták and Magdalena nee Burghart from Osek.

Sorry I can't make out Wenzel Lhoták 's occupation. There are several people on this forum who are really good at reading this writing though! His surname is Czech and his wife is probably an ethnic German.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auerbach,_Upper_Austria

Vsenic could be Všenice, see

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/V%C5%A1enice

There is a separate Czech archive for Plzen region but some records may also be on Family Search.org

Piotrkow,  possibly this one in Poland

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piotrk%C3%B3w_Trybunalski

Osek, possibly this one , but there are several in Czechia

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osek_(Teplice_District)

In my experience marriages usually took place in the brides parish, so you could try Osek for the marriage of Barbara Lhoták 's parents.

It may also be worth trying the 1921 Czech census for Bílina in case the Reichl family are still there, also I did spot a couple of Stadler families there too, so they may have been there before the move to Poland. However it is not indexed, there is a lot of it and some pages are missing.

Glad to have helped. The census link is just to one section - to see the rest click on the "1921" and a list of 16 areas of Bílina should show up.

Thank you to both of you for taking the time to help - that is all really precious information. My mother knew very little of her fathers side of the family - it will mean a lot to her :)
