What is the name of this parish please?
« on: Saturday 02 December 23 12:04 GMT (UK) »
The attached is from the marriage registers of St Andrew's Roman Catholic Church, Glasgow.

In which parish should I look for the baptism record of Mary Anne Wilkie please?

(Parallel request posted on Antrim forum for Charles McMullen's parish of baptism https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=878509.0)

Thank you so much.

Sadly, they don't start early enough - I'm looking for a marriage about 1808 and baptisms 1808 to 1815 or thereabouts.

You should always look later, in case there are later siblings.
And also in adjoining parishes, in case they were lazy (and went to nearest or most convenient church), or moved. Especially for marriages, as the bride was often not from the same parish

Thank you for the advice.

Now that I know that Ballincollig is likely to be the place, I can start looking in neighbouring parishes.

Assuming that I have the right end of the stick I know that there were younger children because there were five born and baptised in Scotland between 1819 and 1830, and I have seen their baptism records. Unfortunately their mother died before the 1851 census. The surviving Ballincollig records, however, start in 1820, after the family had moved to Scotland.

I think that Mary Anne Wilkie's father was James Wilkie, who was born in Airdrie in 1789 and died in Glasgow in 1864. There are records of a James Wilkie who served in the Royal Artillery from 1808 until 1820, and was discharged aged 31. However he gave his place of birth as Evandale, not Airdrie, and his military record doesn't list the places where he served, other than Waterloo.

First, it is certainly Ballincollig. (99.99%)

Second, there was a British Army of occupation barracks in Ballincollig, which apparently hosted R.A.
units. There is at least one other post here on Rootschat looking for info on R.A. birth in Ballincollig.

CofI registers for Ballincollig barracks survive
https://www.ireland.anglican.org/news/7344/ballincollig-military-men-their-families

Confirms it was an artillery barracks.

Was Mary Anne's father originally Catholic or Protestant?
As it was illegal for a Catholic priest to perform a mixed marriage there were a lot of double marriages, with both Protestant (first) and Catholic marriages (second). That way everything was kosher, as the priest was no longer doing anything illegal, as they were already married!

Point is, if he was Protestant, then check the CofI registers!
