Research Elsene (Ixelles) near Brussels
« on: Saturday 02 December 23 17:20 GMT (UK) »
I am researching a relation James Grange Esq, who relocated from London to Bruges in the 1840s. In 1851, he entered into a third marriage with Cathérine Pauline Grange (born De Rudder) in Bruges. James passed away in 1860 in Bruges, while his last wife, Cathérine, lived on until 1906 (indicating a potential significant age difference between them). She eventually passed away in Elsene (Ixelles), near Brussels.

I am keen to gather more information about Cathérine Pauline Grange, particularly details about her life and, if possible, locate her final resting place. James Grange was interred in Bruges, but it seems she was not buried alongside him.

Any assistance in uncovering additional details would be greatly appreciated.

When was James born?

How old was Catherine when she died?

James was born in London in December 1776 and I believe Catherine was born in 1830 in Bruges but I don't have a copy of the Catherine's death record to confirm.

He would have been 75 in 1851 & she would have been 21 - are you sure you have the right James Grange?

Yes we have letters confirming James was in Bruges and census records show Catherine born 1830 in Bruges and James born London 1776 living together so I'm sure this is correct.

Catherine died in Elsene, but according to her death notice, she was still living in Brugge (address: Verversdijk 12). Do you have a picture of James' grave, or how do you know that she wasn't buried there?

I contacted the Central cemetery in Bruges and they were able to give me the burial details for James, his second wife Anne Marie, his son Alexander Porter and his wife but they couldn't find Cathérine. They did look for the coffin numbers don't they didn't think any of the graves still exist.

The death notice for Catherine is a great find! Can you translate what it says?
