where was Marguerite Terrace, Belfast?
« on: Sunday 03 December 23 09:20 GMT (UK) »
A relative died in 1888 in Marguerite Terrace, Ballynafeigh, according to a newspaper announcement and the probate calendar.  That must be off the Ormeau or Ravenhill Road, but there's no Marguerite Terrace there now, and it doesn't occur in a list of street-name changes that I came across a while ago.

There's a Marguerite Park off the Upper Lisburn Road, but that is clearly not in Ballynafeigh (which I think is strictly Ballynafoy townland).

Can anyone enlighten me?

Newspaper of 1905, suggests Maruerite Terrace was Ormeau Road, opposite a Dr Workman's church. Also mention of a Dalriada Avenue as being opposite this church, if that helps.

Thank you, scotmum.

Now I just have to find out where Dr Workman worshipped: possibly St John's Presbyterian church on the corner of Knockbreda Park.  There's a cluster of short streets opposite it.  Or perhaps there's a terrace of houses on the Ormeau Road at that point.

Unfortunately there's no Dalriada Avenue now, and it doesn't occur in the list of street-name changes.

The Insurance Plans of Belfast maps at Old Maps Online might be helpful, but as they link to British Library for these ones, then no use at moment as the BL site has been down since last week following a cyber attack. There may be other maps at Old Maps Online though that could also help. The device I am on at moment is too slow for me to check for you. Or, have a look at:

See the listing under "BALLYNAFEIGH OR BALLYNAFOY ROAD"  in the 1880 directory:

There was a Rev Robert Workman of Newtownbreda (1835-1921), so Newtonbreda Presybyterian church perhaps (which I think could be the St John's you have mentioned).

My guide to Presbyterian Congregations in Ireland confirms that Rev Robert Workman was Minister of Newtownbreda, St John’s from 1862 until September 1918.

Is it Knockbreda Road you are referring to?
The church at the junction with Ormeau Road.

Yes, I meant Knockbreda Road.
Shouldn't try looking at the streetmap without reading glasses!
