Not sure it was Burton's style. Here's his picture of George Eliot for comparison.

I think I agree with you, but remember that some of the apparent difference in style might be due to the Kavanagh picture being a print from an engraving, which would have been a copy of an original.

It would probably be a good idea to see if Carlow County Library can read the name any better on their copy - and they might even know more of its history.
