James HAWLING (HALLING), born 1831, Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, UK
« on: Sunday 03 December 23 14:20 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

This gentleman was transported aboard the Pestongee Bomangee, arriving in Hobart on 30/07/1852.   He was granted his Certificate of Freedom on 16/04/1855.

His parents were Thomas HAWLING and his wife Mary (nee LARNER).

Sadly, I can find no further reference to him (BDM Indexes, TROVE etc.) and wonder if anyone could kindly help.

Thank you,

BAC3

This one is tricky because of the variations in spelling of his surname.
Ancestry.com.au gives his convict records as Hawling and also Howling.

There is a James Howling b 1832 miner to Melbourne in 1857 listed in the Victorian Coastal passenger
index. Unfortunately it doesn't give port of departure BUT many freed convicts left Tasmania for the Victorian Gold rush in the mid 1850's.
Ignore the transcription errors eg Howling, date of birth and its a reasonable match.
I can't find him dying in Victoria.

Thank you for the research.   An interesting possibililty, except Tasmanian "departures" does not record a HOWLING passenger.

The search will continue!!!!

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 8)

The above record is for 1856 not 1857 it does show nationality, port of departure and the name of the ship:

Steerage passenger 12, James HOWLING age 24 years, Miner, Irish, contracted to land Melbourne, Victoria.

Good Morning Merlin,

Thank you for helping my research.   I'm extremely grateful.

Sadly, I think he may remain elusive.

My best wishes for a Merry Christmas and a Happy 2024 ::) ::)
