Parents of Leslie Hofton

Hi all.

I am researching the life of former Manchester United player Leslie Hofton.

Leslie was born 3rd March 1888 in Sheffield, and died 3rd February 1971 in Bridlington.

His 1891 and 1901 census records state that he is living with his grandfather Enoch in Kiveton Park, Yorkshire.

How do I find out which of Enoch's many children is Leslie's father/mother?

I have a feeling it is Frances (b.1869) as I can't find any record of her after 1881 - maybe she died giving birth to Leslie and her parents took the newborn in?

Enoch's wife Elizabeth died in 1890.

According to GRO births - Leslie Brown Hofton's birth was registered in Sheffield RD in June quarter 1888 and mother's maiden name is recorded as Hofton.

A copy of his birth certificate would confirm his parentage - a digital copy can be obtained for £2.50.

I never thought of that!

Father's name is Fred Brown Hofton (maybe Hofton was added by mistake?)

Mother is indeed Frances.

I can't however find Frances' date of death? I have a feeling she died giving birth to Leslie.

On 31.3.1861 Enoch Houghton married Elizabeth Sadler
