Find My Past Newspaper search changing
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 07:46 GMT (UK) »
I had a quick look this morning… or I should say tried to have a quick look at the newspaper archives on FindMyPast!
They appear to be tinkering with it again and taking you initially to
Birth announcements
Death announcements
Marriage announcements

Then hidden lower down a link to newspapers >:(. Still wouldn’t search though.

Clearly the techies they have hired do not understand that we also look for articles other than announcements!

Anyone else notice the glitch?

I did a random search for my father's name and the place where he lived but no BMD announcements at all.

On the face of it, the search criteria looked the same as usual.

PS = did you go to Newspapers or just the search options page?

No problems for me either.  I can't readily see any difference.
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

I added a PS, BB. I'm wondering if jc was talking about the general search page with all the options rather than going to the Newspaper search section  :-\

Is this the page that you're talking about? It's just the General Search page.

AND, from that page, if you hit "Search all Records" then BMD's head the list of finds.

I entered "James Archbell" and got 255 hits, and then at the bottom of the screen are "hits from our newspaper collection" with images related to various entries - James Archbell has 111 hits.

No problems. I've been searching the newspapers almost daily for a few weeks with no changes to the search criteria.
Be aware that there are now TWO links listed in Quick Links that take you to newspapers (as in Gadget's #5), one opens with names, dates, etc boxes; the other with names, keywords, and advanced search.
Almeroth, Germany (probably Hessen). Mawer, Softley, Johnson, Lancaster, Tatum, Bucknall (E.Yorks, Nfk, Lincs)

I did not find the Newspaper searching on FindMyPast of any use at all.

I found masses of info on the BNA site and it was this info that I looked for on FindMyPast where it found zero articles.

So my suggestion is to not rely just on one site.
