Baptism 1561
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 09:21 GMT (UK) »
Which date was Nicholas Mynne baptised?

The first part is pretty straigth forward: 1561 [...] Nicholas Mynne ye sonne of Henrye Mynne gent. was baptised

But the date itself?

The full record is viewable several places:

Ancestry appears to have scanned it twice, for whatever reason, here:

Both of these places have their interpretation, and I have mine, but I would really like to hear what people here think :)

The question is whether it's the 21st or 24th September.

It says xxi[ ]th.

If the space just contains a line linking the i to the th, you have 21st, although you would have expected the i to be lengthened like the one at the end of the date above.

If the space contains is a very much reduced v, that would account for the short i, as it isn't at the end of the number, and give you 24th.

I'm inclined to say it's the 24th. [now agree with 29th see below]

I'd say clearly xxixth - 29th.

(Also note the the writer uses iiii instead of iv, e.g. first entry in 1562. I've never actually counted, but I think that was the more common form at that time.)

If other parts of the register are using iiij for 4, then I would agree with 29th. It is certainly looking like that when you magnify the image.

I also agree with David.  There's an example of the writer's lower-case v in the previous line, which is different.

There's also the presence of the third tail underneath the line.

It all says xxixth.
