23and Me - data theft
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 13:13 GMT (UK) »
The Times today has an article which says 6.9m users had their data stolen in an attack on their DNA testing service which happened in October, far exceeding the 14,000 people it previously said had been affected. This does not affect me but I thought members may be interested.

The Grauniad has an article, which is free to read without a paywall (at least for me)

My understanding is that 23andme have to inform users whose data has been accessed.

I tested with that Site, but apart from a message asking me to change my password, (I think everyone on there got that) I haven’t had a message saying that my account has been accessed.

They’ve now installed 2 step verification, but possibly too late for those affected.

Romilly.

This is actually several weeks old and was reported and discussed here at the time. It is the reason why other sites such as Ancestry are now implementing 2FA. The press are behind the curve or hav e just picked up on later admissions from 23&Me about the number of users affected.
