Info please about Gallipoli veteran William Rupert Goddard of Merriwa, NSW
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 14:03 GMT (UK) »
William Rupert Goddard was born 1885 in Hastings, England. In about 1911/12 he emigrated, alone, to Australia, ending up I believe in Sydney. Q1: Can someone with better skills then mine at Australian immigration records find details of his ship and dates?

On 17 Aug 1914 he enlists in AIF at Randwick, Sydney and he lands at Gallipoli on the very first morning, 25th April 1915. The next day he is wounded - bullet in chest. On 15 Aug 1915 after nearly 4 months treatment in Egypt, he sails from Suez back to Australia.  (I have his Service Record detaling this)

I'm not sure what happens to him next except:
a) 5 May 1916 he is discharged from the Army, presumably after further treatment etc,.
b) Sometime in 1916 he marries in Randwick, Sydney. Q2 Can anyone find precise date?

His bride is Elsie Nodder, who, like William, was living in Walthamstow, London before the war so I suspect they were boy/girlfriend there. I know Elsie left England, alone, on 27 Jan 1916 aboard ship 'Orontes'.

After marrying they moved around a bit, but ended up settling in Merriwa NSW. I believe they had two children. William died there 1973, while Elsie died in Muswellbrook 1985, aged 99. .

So, to repeat: Q1 - when did William migrate from London to Australia? and Q2 - When did he marry Elsie?

Of course other info about them is welcome. Just for context, I am related to the Nodder family and researching them, so my interest in this family stems from Elsie's side.

Thanks

The marriage was 15th March. (Obtained by entering different time, periods in the date fields on NSW indexes)

There is a 26 yr old William Goddard, a sign writer who left England 22nov 1912, in board the Orsova.
But his intended permanent place of residence is supposed to be New Zealand

Very clever trick to work out the marriage date. Thanks

As for whether the William Goddard you found aboard the Orsova in 1912, his age fits. However, his trade when he enlisted was 'Printer' which is not really 'Sign Writer' and you say he stated he was bound for New Zealand. I conclude this probably isn't the right guy, though it is not impossible. His dad was a House Decorator. Frustratingly he is missing from the 1911 UK Census.

Are any post-WW1 censuses available in Australia where we could find him so we could learn his later occupation?

In the 1891 census William's dad was a signwriter; I'd go for mckha's William at reply 2.

Thanks mcGroger, I had missed his family's 1891 census record, now added. I have also now looked at the Wm Goddard aboard Orsove 1912. I see that although it says he was intending to go to NZ he was contracted to land at Sydney. I am thus now far more confident this is 'my' guy. Thanks again for your assistance.
