Elusive Elizabeth Brown Macaulay
« on: Tuesday 05 December 23 15:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello,
I am new to RootsChat and am hoping someone can help shed some light on the elusive Elizabeth Brown Macaulay.

Elizabeth was born in or near Dumbarton in 1827/28. She (recorded as Macaslay, transcriptional error) married James Ewing Johnston in the Gorbals Church, Glasgow on 22 Feb 1853. I contacted the Church but the records from this time were apparently inadvertently destroyed and I can't find a marriage certificate which might have stated her parents names etc. She died in Lambeth, London in 1887.

On all the information I can find she uses her middle name, Brown.  I assume Brown is a family name (possibly her mother's maiden name?).

I am wanting to trace her parents (and other family members) but I can find no record of an Elizabeth Brown Macaulay that fits these details prior to her marriage. Where did she come from? Who are her immediate family?

Any help, pointers or even answers would be amazing!
Thank you for taking the time to read this message.

Thank you Heywood for taking the time to reply!

I saw the record with her as a fringemaker but without knowing who her parents/family are I can't make the leap from records such as this to "my" Elizabeth Brown Macaulay. So frustrating!

I think the only way forward is to nail down who her parents are and therein lies my problem

Heywood, with your details for William Steele, I think this is him and wife Margaret in 1841:

William Steele 73 Teacher b. Scotland
Margaret Steele 68
Margaret Manley 13
William Crawford 15
John Walton 35 Gentleman b. England
John Walton 7 b. England
Gerey Walton 5 b. England

Address High Street North Side, Dumbarton

William Steele showing as Parish School Teacher in some documents.

I can only see one daughter showing on the OPRs, Louisa Steele, christened on 3 Feb 1816 in Dumbarton.

I wonder if this entry is connected?

From OPR births & christenings on SP:

MARY BROWN CRAWFORD
Parents GEORGE CRAWFORD/ELIZABETH MACAULAY
25/04/1851
Ref 496 60 / 333
Dumbarton

George Crawford and Elizabeth M(a)cAulay had at least 6 children in Dumbarton, between 1838 - 1848.

This looks like the family in 1851 www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a149184f4040b9d6e8ca788/george-crawford-1851-dunbartonshire-dumbarton-1810-?locale=en

Do you know if any of the children's middle names are connected to her husband?  Ewing obviously is but you also have Mitchell, Gillespie, Paton and Robinson.

......married James Ewing Johnston in the Gorbals Church, Glasgow on 22 Feb 1853. I contacted the Church but the records from this time were apparently inadvertently destroyed and I can't find a marriage certificate which might have stated her parents names etc.

Statutory registers of marriages did not start in Scotland until 1855 so there is no marriage certificate to find, just the church register which you will find on ScotlandsPeople and parents are rarely named.
