Splendid find, bbart!

The address of the Margaret McAulay identified earlier by Heywood in the 1851 census living with Margaret Steele is 88, Rutherglen Loan. ( as per free cen!) The address given in the newspaper notice quoted for the marriage of  James Johnston and Elizabeth McAulay is 88, Rutherglen Road. Coincidence?

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

It looks like we are on the right track!  I just love how everyone's input eventually gets us there!

Another piece of the puzzle, with the age either a bit wrong, or was wrong on the 1851:

Glasgow Herald  06 August 1852
At 88 Rutherglen Road, on the 31st ultimo, Mrs Steel, aged 81.

I'm not seeing a match in Scotlandspeople burials in 1852 for Steel or Steele.   :(

Heywood, with your details for William Steele, I think this is him and wife Margaret in 1841:

William Steele 73 Teacher b. Scotland
Margaret Steele 68
Margaret Manley 13
William Crawford 15
John Walton 35 Gentleman b. England
John Walton 7 b. England
Gerey Walton 5 b. England

ScotlandsPeople have this Margaret indexed as MCAULAY.

For what it's worth, there is a marriage index of a William Steele to Margrat McAulay 24 Sep 1814 at Dumbarton, Dunbarton, Scotland.  (or was this already posted?!?)

Can anyone enlighten me as to what 'on the 31st ultimo' means in the post by bbart:
Glasgow Herald  06 August 1852
At 88 Rutherglen Road, on the 31st ultimo, Mrs Steel, aged 81.

Would you agree that niece Margaret living with Aunt Margaret Steele with Elizabeth in 1851 is not Elizabeth's sister but a cousin perhaps? If, that is, she is the same Margaret that marries Hugh Rankin in 1852 given that the names of her parents given on her death certificate are not James W Macaulay, but John Macaulay and Catherine Brown. I have uncovered  that James W did have a brother called John but he married Ann Cameron. Yet the Brown surname is intriguing!!

Being new to this I am so thankful to you and absolutely amazed at all your detective skills - watch out Scotland Yard!!  ;D
