Hi Pablo - this is really wonderful and so comprehensive - thank you so very much for sharing!!

Looking at your notes and combining them with what I have managed to find, with help from the amazing team on RootsChat, it seems there's a link between these two families. James Wardrop Macaulay from the Levengrove family is the most likely candidate to be the father of the Elizabeth Brown Macaulay (b. 1828 and who later married James Ewing Johnston) that I am interested in. Elizabeth B seems to have moved at some point from Dumbarton to join the Rutherglen side of the family. James W's older sister Margaret also appears to have moved to Rutherglen and married William Steele, a teacher.

Elizabeth Brown and another ?cousin, Margaret Macaulay, both of similar age are living with Margaret Steele in Rutherglan. When Margaret Macaulay dies her parents are recorded as being John Macaulay and Catherine Brown. In your notes there appears to have been a liaison between John Macaulay and Catherine Brown that resulted in a son William, but could there also have been a daughter, ie Margaret who ends up living with Elizabeth Brown at her aunt's house in Rutherglen in 1851?

Interestingly prior to this, in 1841 a Willam Crawford (15yrs) and Margaret Manley/Macaulay (13yrs) are recorded as living with Margaret Steele in Dumbarton.

James W's wife was possibly Margaret Forsyth, again from Dumbarton but she is an unknown quantity as there seems to be little information (birth, death, etc) about her. I think in addition to Elizabeth Brown, James W and Margaret also had a son, William, born 31.12.1825 in the Dumbarton/Cardross region.

Do you have any further information about this family such as when/where James W and his wife Margaret died, whether he and Margaret had any other children?

Thanks again so much for sharing your notes, there's so much to think about and to follow up!!
Madelief  :)

Hi, Madelief.  I will see if I can find any additional information for you.
From what I have found, the Rutherglen family were wealthy Calico printers with a strong connection to the Houston family.
