David Douglas and Margaret Campbell (married 18/11/1803 Collessie)
« on: Wednesday 06 December 23 07:12 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I recently found this old thread with some helpful photos (thank you!) of Douglas graves in the Collessie Parish cemetery:
https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=527727.msg4710053#msg4710053

I'm particularly interested in David Douglas (1785(?)-1856) and his wife Margaret Campbell (1774-1857), married 18/11/1803, Collessie.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has information about them.  In particular, I've seen some ancestry sites which suggest that this David Douglas is the son of Sholto Douglas and Mary Bruce (married in Auchtermuchty 18/7/1782) and I'd like to know if that is correct.

Thanks

Bill

Hi Bill

Welcome to RootsChat  :)

From the details you have given, David Douglas's death shows on the www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk death index as follows:

DAVID DOUGLAS
Age 73
Mother's maiden name BRUCE
1856
Ref 416 / 21
Collessie, Fife

You can view the image of the registration on pay to view SP (costs are very reasonable). This would let you confirm his parents' details. From his death entry on the index, mother is showing with the maiden name of Bruce.

You have this already www.findagrave.com/memorial/148328512/david-douglas from NorrieG's postings on the other thread. Just adding here for more detail.

There are two entries showing in the Old Parish Registers for births and/or christenings:

DAVID DOUGLASS
SHOLTO DOUGLASS/MARY BRUCE
16/01/1785
Ref 406 10 / 167
Auchtermuchty

JOHN DOUGLASS
SHOLTO DOUGLASS/MARY BRUCE
09/03/1783
Ref 406 10 / 164
Auchtermuchty

You can view the images from the registers on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Margaret Campbell's death entry is indexed as:

MARGARET DOUGLAS
Age 83
Mother's maiden name GULLAND
1857
Ref 416 / 25
Collessie

I can't see a possible christening entry for Margaret on SP, but there is this possible marriage for who could be her parents:

JOHN CAMPBELL and ELSPETH GULEN
21/02/1772
Ref 435 30 / 333
Kettle, Fife

Margaret showed as born in Markinch, Fife on her 1851 census entry www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5a14a515f4040b9d6ea2ba79/david-douglas-1851-fife-collessie-1785-?locale=en

Would be good for you to confirm her parents from her 1857 death registration.

Kennoway, Fife
