That sounds like the gentleman. I have never been able to find his place of work however this would make sense.

I wonder if the Margaret Evans you located is correct, thats one hell of an age gap marriage even now.

Yes quite a gap but women had very few choices in those days.

Looks pretty likely to me given the 1871 Census that is your John and Mother Margaret remarried :)
