Radar, Military College of Science/RAF Civil Instruction Officer - records
« on: Wednesday 06 December 23 11:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
this spans both before and after WWII, but I'm guessing given the content this'll be best known by WWII gurus:

My (deceased) grandfather was (as I've tracked so far):
- a Civil Instruction Officer to the Royal Air Force at the R.A.F. Electrical Wireless School, Cranwell, Sleaford, Lincolnshire, England (around 1932)
- Joined the Military College of Science in 1935, Woolwich, London
- with the MCS went to Lydd, Kent (involved with Chain Home radar I think)
- in 1941 was Head of Radar and Telecommunications Branch, Royal Military College of Science
- when the MCS split he went to Tottington, Bury (Lancashire) with the RMCS to teach there
- post-war, moved to Shrivenham when the (now Royal) MCS merged and taught there as Professor of Electrical Engineering (Radar and Telecommunications)

my question is, where can I find any records? Would the (R)MCS come under RAF during the war? He started out as an RAF instructor, but he was always a civilian, not a soldier, so where can I find any records of his war-time (and wider) 'career'? His children don't know what he did during the war (always very hush-hush), just that it involved the development of radar.

many thanks for any pointers :-) :-)
