Gertrude Emily Rose May Purkiss

Gertrude Emily Hatch mmn Downes was born in June qr 1897 in Andover - Chilbolton.

She goes as Hatch in 1901 but Purkiss in 1911.  Her father was born as Hatch but his mother married Mr Purkiss shortly after.

She married Henry John King in 1917 in Winchester, but he divorces her in 1918 - he has accused her of several adulterous encounters and wilful communication of a venereal disease.
She married Alfred Meffen in 1939 on the Isle of Wight, he died, she married John T Emery in Romsey in 1942, he died, she married William F Pearcey in 1971.  She died in 1973/74 in Romsey, with birth date of 12th May 1897.

The first marriage has been verified with on-line marriage certificate and divorce records etc, the rest were me trying to work out what happened to her.  Trees were bad.

She possibly has two illegitimate sons in 1931 and 1933 (Purkiss/Purkiss) (Winchester and Southampton) who both die as Meffen in 2016 in Hampshire.

Can anyone see any other traces of her e.g. 1939 under any surnames?

The child born in 1933 seems to have been re-registered with the Meffen Surname. Written by hand at the bottom of the MEE - MEL  page in correct quarter 1933. with note - S40 - presumably Sept quarter 1940. On GRO after the entry for the child with surname Purkiss it says occasional copy A.

The marriage to Meffen was in the December quarter of 1939....so post register.

I thought the sons would turn up somewhere even if she did not, but they are as elusive so perhaps both still redacted.
But I also thought that once I had her birth date I would get her, but No.

What about just her Christian  names plus or minus a year or 2 of her birth year, just a thought

Think I have her - on Ancestry she's indexed as Gertrude Hoffen. Living in Romsey. Her later surnames of Emery and Pearcey are noted. She has two redacted people with her and some Purkisses next door (added: or possibly in the same household).

She's also knocked 4-6 years of her age = the image looks like 03, but Ancestry has 05

The Purkiss at the same address appears to be  your Gertrude's  brother. There's a matching birth with mmn Downes
