Currency from 1899
« on: Thursday 07 December 23 17:19 GMT (UK) »
I'm trying to find out what ten shillings & also eighty pounds in 1899 would be worth today. I have tried using various sites but nothing is coming out the same  :-\I would be grateful for any help.

Bank of England website shows £80 in 1899 would be worth £8493.55.
https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/monetary-policy/inflation/inflation-calculator

But it rather depends of how you define inflation?
Consumer Price Index?
Retail Price Index?
Composite Price Index?
Cost of Living Index?
Gross Domestic Product?
Average Earnings?

I normally recommend using the National Archives currency converter, which also gives you an idea of what money would actually buy at various dates (up to 2017).

One other approach would be to find out the average pay a worker would expect to earn per week at the time you are researching.

Beer was 3d a pint back then. Ten shillings would have bought 40 pints, so the equivalent of around £180 today by that measure.

By the same measure, £80 in 1899 would be the equivalent of £28,800 in today's beer money.
