Muscular Bride & Odd Groom
« on: Friday 08 December 23 23:15 GMT (UK) »
Would I be close with a 1905-10 guess on this dress with the jumbo shoulders?
I'm not sure why the groom wants to hold the bouquet.

I don't think you are far out with your guess. Nice photo. I think the groom is looking for a glass if Vino  ;D ;D

There's something very odd about the groom. It looks as if it might have been added or 're-modelled'!

His left leg and foot don't match the right leg - detail, shading etc.  His left hand is either holding some object or it has been wrongly aligned with the backdrop. Also, his right arm looks to have been pasted on from another shot - note the shadow detail (as the left leg) .

Also, there is a paler shading by the left of his face  and, overall the tones on him don't really fit with the rest of the photo - e.g. the toning on the faces are very different.

Just my take on the image. I'm on a laptop so more 'oddities'  might be found on a larger screen.

PS - could be 10 years earlier. I have seen quite a few examples of that sleeve with the flap dated 1895-98

Agree with Gadget's date mid - late 1890's around 1896-99 I would suggest.
I would also agree that he may be an add-on as the pose is all wrong.
There are elements of this that suggest it may be an over sketched enlargement of the original.
Before the introduction of photo enlargers it was a case of copying the original & making it
bigger resulting in loss of definition which you can see particularly around his shirt & tie where
it's been outlined with a pencil.
I'm not sure what's going on with his left leg but it looks like the ruching you would see on a
woman's skirt.

Maybe originally it was meant like this:

Zefiro That’s an interesting photo. Several things jumped out at me -
Did people wear pince nez glasses all the time or just pull them out for close reading ?
Is he wearing gloves or a glove on his right hand or does he just have very straight evenly spaced veins on the back of his hand.
He seems to be holding a cigarette in his left, would this symbolise sophistication or wealth ?
The stripe in the fabric of his trousers doesn’t line up, it may just be puckered or perhaps his flies are undone  :o

If the image is in a large frame, with glass on top, could the odd shading be a reflection of the person photographing the piece?

Good thinking.
Looking again it could be a shirtsleeve.
