James Gregson, Dawson Street, Manchester
« on: Saturday 09 December 23 15:06 GMT (UK) »
I have found/got a copy of a Will for a James Gregson (Dawson Street, Manchester).

He died 25th Dec 1831. The Will identifies his mother - Martha, his sister - Elizabeth, his brothers - Thomas and William, and a nephew - James . All have a share of his estate.

There are similarities with his Will signature and the signature he added to my ggg -grandfather's (John Gregson) marriage documents.

Is he the brother of JG?

Does anyone know of this Manchester family?

I do not know how old James Gregson (Manchester ) was when he died.

Looking at your previous posts, your Gregson interest doesn’t seem to be Manchester though - is that right?

Thank you so much for your input

I do not think your James Gregson of Water Street is the same as my JG.  Yours is only 21 yrs old and I doubt that he would write such a well written Will and had £300 to give away.  This is now worth £42300 - a considerable amount.
Re my interest in a Manchester Gregson, at the marriage of my John Gregson and Betty Calvert in the Blackburn cathedral in 1822 a James Gregson was a witness.  James was noted as coming from Manchester.  He signed a document to confirm that my John Gregson was not born in England and so presumably was not able to show a birth certificate.  Where the heck was he born?
At the marriage John Gregson was noted to be 36 and a widower.  So who did he marry first?  How did his first wife die?  Did she die?? Did they have any children?

Radcliff
It is v interesting/confusing/frustrating that your John and Martha's children Martha and William died in March 1802 (St John's Manchester).  But then you have found an Elizabeth Gregson born to a John and Martha Gregson March 1802 (St James Manchester) - the same month as the two very young
 Martha and William died.

It is a real coincidence to have two different sets of John and Martha Gregson in such close proximity.

I am happy to email a copy of the Will if it helps others searches.
