Mabel was a daughter of John Craig Martin and Sarah nee Colman. Her birth date strangely comes from U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007 Mabel Downing showing parents as John Martin & Sarah which means I presume she must have married a Mr Downing. However I can't find the marriage for her. Do you think this is a 'red herring?'

Her Social Security number was issued in New York between 1936 and 1950, and the note indicate that she was listed as Mabel Downing in May 1942.  If you can find her on a passenger list or census record, that might help to further narrow down the time frame and location of the marriage.

I think she was married before. There is a US Passport application for Boyd Campbell , dated 1908 , and his wife Mabel ,who was born in Hastings , and a possible marriage in England :

I wonder if Boyd was the same one who got a divorce in 1907 and was noted to be an actor playing in New York and London.  https://www.newspapers.com/article/oakland-enquirer/136694012/  Maybe his divorce wasn't completed at the time of the 1907 marriage in England, so they had another ceremony to make sure it was legal.
