Spalding, The Crescent and Station Steet
« on: Tuesday 12 December 23 17:28 GMT (UK) »
Until 1964 my grandfather, Lorenzo Williams, had a Tailor and Outfitter shop in The Crescent, Spalding.

Does anyone have access to a Kelly's Directory (or similar) to see when he started business there?

In 1934, newspaper adverts show that he was holding a Closing Down Sale of a business with the address 17 Station Street, Spalding.

I would also like to know when that business started/closed from a directory.

Thanks,  Pam

There's an advert in the Spalding Guardian 7 Dec 1929 that reads
"We have removed to new premises at 17 Station Street, Spalding, L Williams Tailor and Outfitter"

Thanks for that.  Sorry but I can't find it. (Find My Past)

In 1921 there is an advert saying he has purchased the shop previously owned by Mr Hurn in The Crescent and there are adverts for him at A1 The Crescent and 17 The Crescent.

Then in 1930 his address is given as "17 Station Street (opposite the Regent Theatre)".

I have found lots of his adverts with shop address of Station Street and a Closing Down Sale at that address in 1934, followed by creditors meetings in that year.  In 1934 he announces he is now at 14 The Crescent, and he is there until he retires in 1964.

Looking at a current map of the area I am now wondering if the street names got changed and 17 Station Street and 17 The Crescent are actually the same address??

Any thoughts, it's confusing me!

Normally, I'd have posted the snippet cut from the paper but at the moment RC is not delivering the appropriate screen after I click on "Attachments and other options". This occasionally happens.
Have checked and found the snippet on FindMyPast, Spalding Guardian 7 Dec 1929 - page 1, foot of column 1.

SuanJ - true what they say, you learn something new every day. Thanks for the clarification.

But I'm going to miss that "will it or won't it be there" moment when I click on "Attachments" in future!.

Past)

This has some great pics of Old Spalding including the Regent Theatre, Station St and the Crescent.

17 Station Street is shown in 'On The Market'

It is a continuation of The Crescent, and his residential Street, Spring Gardens, adjoins The Crescent.

Thanks - I have now found the advert on FindMyPast, Spalding Guardian 7 Dec 1929.

I am still wondering if 17 The Crescent  (where he is in the 1920's) is the same property as 17 Station Street?

In 1935 there is an ad which says 14 The Crescent (the property I remember him being at till 1964) so I guess he re-locates then after some financial problems.
