Joseph Caffery b. 1866 Stockport, Cheshire

Hi

Re: Joseph Caffery b. 1866 Stockport, Cheshire

I'm trying to find Joseph Caffery on the 1891 Census, age 25.

On the 1881 census he is living with his mother, Bridget b. 1836 Ireland, at 34 Stringer Street, Stockport - he works in the mill (alongside many of my relatives and their neighbors).

Father: John - both parents have died by 1891, looks like.  Siblings: James b.1854, Ann b.1859, Alice b. 1864.

1891 ?

1893 married - to Mary Ann (nee Thorniley) b. 1870 Stockport (Father: Samuel Thorniley b. 1827) - sister to Sarah Thorniley b. 1855 m. John Perry b. 1852

1901 growing family: John b. 1892, Norah b.1893, James b.1897, Joseph b.1900,
1911 growing family:  ...the above + Alice b. 1903, Sarah b. 1904, Nillie b. 1907 and Mary b. 1910
1921 ?

His name spelling varies - such as Caffrey.  His birth place varies: Manchester, Lancashire (1871) and  Stockport, Cheshire elsewhere.

Thank you for any help.

I think his mother may still be alive in 1891. Age is slightly out and says she's single, but place of birth and occupation fit

Bridge Caffery    52    b Dublin  [as per Ancestry]

Piece    2803
Folio    13
 Address 4 Staffordshire, Stockport

Re: Bridge(t) Caffery b. 1836 Dublin on the 1891

Yes, thank you for finding her on Staffordshire Street, Stockport.

Looking for Joseph Caffery b. 1866, Stockport, Bridge(t)'s son, somewhere nearby, as he doesn't seem to be home with her, and he is not living with his future wife Mary Ann Thorniley b. 1870 Stockport (she is at her parent's home).

Re: Joseph Caffery b. 1866 - 1891, age 25, search for him

Yes, I was wondering if he had enlisted and your reply seems to suggest that.

I was also wondering what would have prompted that - it wasn't WW1, for instance.  In anticipation of the Second Boer War?

Anyway Joseph was out of the army and married in 1893 and had already started a large family around 1891.

Thank you!

Best wishes,
Lesleyperry  :)

Hi again!

Re: John Caffery b. 1829, Cheadle/Stockport,Cheshire

Was a John Caffery b. 1829 Cheadle/Stockport in the army in the period around 1860 to 1870?

I went back to the censuses to line them all up and I'm missing Joseph's father, John Caffery (various spellings - Caffer...) on both the 1861 and the 1971 censuses.

(Not sure if John b.1829 made it to 1881 census (as Bridget b.1836 Dublin, Ireland, wife, is only living with her son, Joseph b. 1866, 15 years at that time)).
...
1861: Bridget (Bridge) lodging with her two eldest children - James Henry Caffer b.1854, Hannah b.1859.  No husband John b. 1829 around.
....
1871: Bridget, head is living with all four of her children: James Henry, Hannah, Alice 1864, Joseph b. 1866.  No husband John b. 1829 around.
.....
1881 Bridget is living with her youngest Joseph b.1866, age 15.  No husband John b. 1829 around - maybe had died by then.
.....
1891 Bridget by herself - Joseph b. 1866 in the army - see thread.

Any information is appreciated.
Thanks,
Lesleyperry  :)
