Hi there, this appears to say [something] Japanner? Can anyone translate for me? You will see his son is doing the same thing (whatever it is)!

It’s a type varnishing, you can find plenty about it if you Google.

Ah! Master! Yes I can see it now. I have now found another thread on this forum where there were two interpretations of 'jappanning', one on metalwork and one on wood, but in both cases applying varnish to give that dark glossy look.

The word in brackets looks like Finishing.
Japanning is a type of finish.

I’d say the word in brackets is furniture, ie differentiating his work from those who japanned metal items..
