Perhaps they meant to indicate "real name of John Bernard Thompson (is William Renner)"

Possibly adding to the confusion; another John Bernard Thompson died in 1926 and is buried in the same cemetery.

Yes, Jorose, I think too that this is what may have been indicated.

An update - I have been able to track down a photo of his Father William and the latter's obit in the Whitley Seaside Chronicle held at North Shields local studies.
I have added these to Find a Grave.
