45 is not too old if she was healthy but a first pregnancy at that age can have risks.  Any Griffin birth should show mothers maiden Cottrell as that was her birth surname

A maiden name isn't defined by birth surname, so may well not be Cottrell ...especially for a woman who has changed her name or used  different names.

Yes although there is some confusion to what her name was before. She was Cottrell by birth, and i foind a ship manifest from 1950 which confirms she was still Cottrell by then.

The 1950-1964 time she had her name changed by Depoll to Bayliss.

Thanks, bit of a mystery the Bayliss name for sure  :-\

Was she abroad a lot between 1950-1964?  Maybe she met or married a Mr Bayliss there.

She worked in military so maybe. I know when she married my grandfather she was living in Surrey.
I know she married as a spinster. It could be she went abroad again, but info is scarce. I applied for her military history to see if that helps.

The 1950-1964 time she had her name changed by Depoll to Bayliss.

Do you have proof that she changed it by deed poll. In the UK you can call yourself what you like as long as it is not for fraudulent purposes, it does not have to be changed by deed poll.

Yes, it says so on her marriage certificate to Walter.
Gladys Bayliss (name changed by deed poll).
Her fathers name was Cottrell, which is how i know that was her maiden name
