Parish registers GREEN Lee, Kent
« on: Tuesday 10 August 04 20:38 BST (UK) »
With the help of Adi1962 I've just made an important discovery about my GREEN Family and I am appealing for help in following it through.

It appears that my ancestor Ann Green, born about 1806, DID have an earlier child than the twins Walter and Martha.  His name was Josiah Green and he would have been born about 1829, give or take a year or two.  He was 12 in the 1841 census, but was gone by 1851.

Can anyone please look up a baptism for him in Lee, Kent, some time between say 1828 and 1830?  His parents were James and Ann Green.

I've searched the 1881 census but can't find a likely candidate for Josiah, although I have found a possible death for him in Bethnal Green in 1867.  I am really excited about this as I think Josiah could be the father of my 3 x great grandmother Fanny Layton Culling's 4 or 5 illegitimate children - I have been unfairly impugning Walter's honour!  Sorry, Walter!

Hi,

Thought I do a quick check up on James, as he was a merchant , thought Pigot's might be a good bet. Unfortunately Pigot's seem to class Lee as London and not Kent, which I do not have. Not sure if this is consistant with every one, every year or not.

On the Commercial Directory for Kent, 1839 GENUKI have indexed it and there are loads of entries for Green, but without sight do not know if it includes Lee area.

Hi MrsLizzy

As this is a really old request you may well have solved it by now but, if not .............

Firstly, the 1841 census says that Josiah GREEN wasn't born in Kent so looking around further there is:

1851 - High Road, Lee, Kent

Josiah J GREEN head mar 22 chemist & druggist b.Horsleydown Surrey
Mary wife 22 b.Lee Kent
Mary H dau 1m b.Kent
+ an apprentice and some servants

HO107/1591 folio 82 page 23
...........................

He was Josiah James GREEN according to baptisms of some children http://www.familysearch.org and possibly the Josiah GREEN (son of James and Ann) baptised Horsleydown, Surrey 1829 http://www.familysearch.rog

Thank you Adrian and Casalguidi!  I'm especially keen to track down James, as I've been wondering if Ann made him up!
