Help needed to improve this photo please

This is William Albert George Pepworth who served in WW1 in the Royal Engineers.
It looks like this picture was taken through glass?
If it could be made better I would be very grateful. Maybe a slight touch of colour would help.

My try. :)
Stuart, in adjusting the proportions etc I've ended up with an image with dimensions about 6X10.
