Buying out of Army 1890's (and re-enlisting)
« on: Saturday 16 December 23 10:26 GMT (UK) »
Jesse Rawlence/Rawlance of Brockenhurst enlists in the army in 1893 and buys himself out in 1895.  This costs him £18 which would have been about a year's pay for a private.
In 1901 he is discharged as being medically unfit and having served a little over a year. I cannot see any re-enrolment records.

(He then marries in 1903, not clear when he left his wife, but pops up in America, 'marries' once or twice more, and stays there.)

Has anyone any experience of this sort of behaviour, or where the money could be lawfully obtained - his Mother had died and his father does not seem to be around - he gives a brother as next-of-kin.

Thank-you

My grandfather signed up on 19th September 1898 and bought out on 29th September 1898 and discharged on 4th October 1898!

£10 paid but no idea how the family got the money as his dad was just a labourer;  I suspect a family whip-round as one of his older sisters had married a local businessman. ::)

ditto!

My grandfather, age 18, attested 5 Nov 1894 at Neath and joined the depot, Wrexham, on 9 Nov 1894. The next entry reads " 3/1/95 Discharged having claimed it on payment of £10 within 3 months of attesting."
Often wondered where the £10 came from - family poor as church mice.

Thank-you for those examples.
They both got out within 3 months so 'only' £10.  I did wonder if there was some money somewhere, relative or friend.  But if I had helped with money in 1895 I would have been a bit annoyed to hear he had then re-joined.  He was a valet/footmen, so an employer might have helped.

Chempat,

I think you may be confusing two different people.

The Jesse Rawlence number 4049 who joined the Hampshire Regiment in February 1893 was 5' 5¾" tall, had a fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair.
The Jesse Rawlence number 11430 who joined the Imperial Yeomanry in 1901, and was later medically discharged, was 5' 9" tall*, had a dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair.

*Added: At the time of his discharge medical he was recorded as 5' 8".

I did wonder that but I could find no other birth for a Jesse Rawl?nce in the relevant time frame.

Also, as he ages from 18 in 1893 to 26 in 1901 he has the same birth year and is growing in height - better nutrition in army and many men have not reached full height by 18?  Don't know about complexion though - have wondered how accurate they were.

I agree he may have grown a bit, but to hav e also changed his hair and eye colour seems to be a bit of a stretch.

Have you checked the signatures?

The top one here is 11430
The others are 4049

I started to look for signatures, then thought I better tidy the house for Christmas.
