Conundrum - logic makes nonsense of the facts or not?
« on: Sunday 17 December 23 12:00 GMT (UK) »
From iving fmily members i obtained information that my Mary Ann Knight b 1821 Hampton Wick dies in 1901. She married Thomas Hale from Stanstead Abbotts and lived in Brentford. Up until 1850 her children are recorded as having  mother "Mary Ann". After 1850 the mother is recorded as Sarah.

Did Mary Ann die  and Thomas remarry or is this a name thing with two other Mary Ann's in the immediate family (her mother and daughter)? Census after 1850 showed a consistent birth of 1824. i can't find her in 1841 - she's not witht he rest of the family.

There is a death of a "Mary" at the right time Brentford but not "Mary Ann". There is also a marriage in London of a Thomas Hale to a "Sarah" at the right time (also from Hampron Wick) and he recorded as a Market Gargener which he was.

Logic says she died and he remarried yet family say Mary Ann lived until 1901. What to believe? Thanks

How does the birthplace of Sarah compare to that of Mary Ann

Any children born after 1850?  Were their births registered?  If so - have you checked GRO online for mothers maiden name?

The 1842 marriage of Hale & Knight shows him as a carter - father Thomas occ cow keeper

You don’t give any date for the Sarah marriage but if it was 1850 & she was Sarah Mulloy - Thomas is shown as a 29yr old widower occ carman - father Thomas - occ carman

Can you include some dates rather than “at the right time” & “a marriage in London”

Are the children of Mary & Thomas living with Thomas & Sarah post 1850?

I also suggest that you look at the GRO indexes to find which children were Mary Ann's and which were Sarah's.  I doubt that you have any living relatives who personally knew Mary Ann so why do they think she changed her name and died in 1901?

1861 census shows 3 children born before 1850.  William 18, Edwin 16 & Mary 13

If you use GRO online - the 2 boys births show mmn was Knight

Edwin James baptism is on Ancestry 1844 showing parents Thomas & Mary Ann

Presume the death you are referring to was 1849 Brentford.  GRO online shows age as 28.  Buried 8.7.1849 St George Old Brentford
