Just hoping we can get through to Christmas Day without any more hitches, and that what we've bought in so far isn't going to go to waste.

That sounds a bit dramatic, but this last week we got in a turkey crown (frozen) and some cream and various cheeses with use by dates a few days after Christmas and onwards, plus the usual milk, yogurt etc for the week ahead. Then came the power cuts.... (you might not have seen anything about these on the news because we're not in London or the south-east)

The electricity went off yesterday at about 4.30pm, and didn't come on again till 3.30 this morning. Then having just about caught up with ourselves it went off again today a bit before 1.00pm, and finally came back about 6.30pm. We haven't opened the freezer at all since before the first power cut, so we think the turkey will be OK, but we've had to get odd things from the fridge, so just in case there's a problem we're planning to get some more milk and cream tomorrow. We've also got some potatoes and sprouts in the garage, where it's coolest, but as that has an electric door they'll be inaccessible if the power goes off again.

And not having an appropriate smartphone/data package (to use as an internet hub) it meant we couldn't get online at all - so that was one of the first things I dealt with this evening when power was restored.

Happy days...  :-\

Shouldn't the turkey be thawing out anyway now Arthur ?
Got to get to room temperature by evening 24th ?
Cheese will be better at room temperature anyway, it'll be fine for a month or so or until you start to cut the mould off from the outside.
Can you tell, I'm anti-fridge ?
Hope all goes well.  :)

Hello, I am new to this diary thread.

We were going to go to our daughter's in London for Christmas to see her, her husband and two children. But earlier in the week, I noticed that my husband's curry had no taste. I took a Covid test and I'm positive. He was negative until yesterday. So we're spending Christmas at home, making do with a video call. (Does that ring a bell?)

Thank you. May I wish everyone a happy Christmas, whatever they are doing.
There are many in worse situations than we are, so I am grateful for that.

No, it's only a crown (2.6kg IIRC - a few ounces short of 6lb). We reckon about 24 hours in the garage should do for defrosting, and it'll go in the oven some time Christmas morning.

Our local convenience store had all the dairy stuff we needed when we went this morning, so as long as there are no power cuts long enough to raise doubts about this batch as well, or at the time we need to get things in or out of the garage, we should be fine. And we made sure that any potential surplus has a long enough date to see us through to New Year. Phew. (But in view of things happening elsewhere, it might all come under First World Problems.)

Sorry to hear about the Covid, Pennant, and I hope it passes mildly.

So we're spending Christmas at home, making do with a video call. (Does that ring a bell?)
Surely it depends on what ringtone you've chosen?  :-\ ::) :D  But the concept does seem rather familiar.

After a couple of fruitless shopping trips braved it after breakfast this morning and not only was the store fairly quiet but got everything I needed and more, very relieved plan b has no need to come out.

Very best wishes to everyone and a speedy recovery to those under the weather  :).

Flight last night delayed by an hour. :-[
But finally made it :)
Bristol airport having major changes to car parks - probably half mile walk now.
So, my daughters found a wheelchair and pushed me!
Looking after grandies this afternoon; 10, 10 and 13.
